Play on: Washington Nationals
Rating: 8*
Two teams well in playoff contention will square off at PNC Park tonight when the NL East leading Washington Nationals will take on the Pittsburgh Pirates who are second in the NL Central. The Pirates won the opener of a three-game set 7-3 last night, but I think the Nats will bounce back and pick up the W tonight. Max Scherzer will take the ball for the visitors and he's been superb this season compiling a 2.09 ERA over his first 19 starts. He's been particularly sharp on the road where he's 6-3 with a 1.57 ERA in 10 outings and he's 4-2 with a 2.50 against the Pirates lifetime. Pittsburgh will turn to Jeff Locke who's 4.01 ERA for the year is almost double the size of Scherzer's. He's off a pair of losses conceding a total of seven runs, four earned, on 13 hit and five walks over 12 1/3 frames.
Note that:
- Washington is 7-1 in Scherzer's last eight starts with four days of rest while Pittsburgh is 1-5 in Lockes last six.
- Pittsburgh is 1-4 in its last five games as an underdog of +110 to +150 and also 1-4 in Locke's last five coming in as a dog within the same span.
- Washington has won seven of the last eigth meetings overall.
