Arizona put up 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 6-4 win on Tuesday and I look for them to carry over that momentum with another victory tonight. The Padres appear to have hit a wall, as the disappointment of a season that was suppose to result in a playoff spot is setting in. San Diego has gone just 3-9 over their last 12 games.
The Padres will be sending out Andrew Cashner, who has been a major disappointment this year. Cashner was expected to pitch like an ace and has instead went 5-15 with a 4.37 ERA and 1.440 WHIP in 28 starts. He's been especially bad on the road, where he's 2-8 with a 5.00 ERA and 1.526 WHIP in 16 outings. To top it off, he comes in struggling with a 6.32 ERA and 1.978 WHIP in his last 3 starts.
Arizona counters with Robbie Ray, who despite not pitching deep into games has been effective. Ray has a 1.72 ERA over his last 3 starts, allowing just 3 runs on 11 hits in 15 2/3 innings of work. Ray has consistently pitched well against division opponents, posting a 2.93 ERA and 1.217 WHIP over 8 starts against the NL West.
Padres are 2-6 in their last 8 following a loss and just 6-20 in their last 26 during game 3 of a series. They are also a mere 2-10 in Cashner's last 12 following a loss and 2-10 in his last 12 against the NL West. Take Arizona!
